Social worker blasts EastEnders

A social worker has complained to EastEnders over the appalling lack of respect for social workers and foster carers.

The worker said the scenes in which Jade is contacted by her biological family and even visiting them is "infuriating".

She continued, “If it wasn’t bad enough  the family were able to track her down at her foster placement so easily, we also discover  the foster carer she is placed with will accept cash bribes from the family in order to agree to a DNA test and facilitate contact with family members the girl has never met,” the social worker said.

“The foster carer’s response to the family was ‘as long as children’s services don’t find out’. I know it’s ‘just a soap’ but I just find the lack of respect shown to social workers and foster carers appalling.
“Quite frankly our jobs are hard enough without rubbish like this making it harder,” she  said.

EastEnders has responded and explained that they sought guidance and  advice from a "number of experts" in the field.

The BBC also explained that EastEnders is a fictional and, although they aim to reflect real life, they are not a documentary.
“Therefore an element of dramatic licence is sometimes necessary – as Jade’s foster dad is not meant to be representative of all foster parents.”
It added: “We must also point out that although we don’t condone the actions of all of our fictional characters all of the time, we believe that they should be able to express views/opinions or actions, even if we don’t personally agree with them.”

Maris Stratulis, England manager for the British Association of Social Workers, said the risk of such storylines was that many people could gain a wrong impression of how fostering works.
“While we appreciate the programme uses dramatic licence to create storylines, why do they have to get it so wrong when it comes to social work?” Stratulis said.
EastEnders caused controversy with social workers a couple of years ago, with the infamous ‘Lexi and Lola’ storyline.

  3. This sounds true to life after all the research iv done into forced adoption the story line is quite tame.
There is a darker side to social services and secret family courts profiting from the fostering & adoption process with children stolen from loving parents with their crime being...... Future emotional harm!!!
Yes the system now proclaims to be psycho sorry I mean psychic so take yr child . WE NEED HELP....

  4. Yes the story line is a long way from the truth if you want to be close to the truth as possible then come & see me & I will tell you how it is coz I did have 5 beautiful children 3 boys and 2 girls but social services took them away because of possible future emotional harm now dose that sound right to everyone I don't think so coz they only ment to take children away if they are in danger there & then & that of being hurt eg being hit over & over again sexual assault killed etc

  6. Social services are corrupt they're set up to fail they take children into care and leave them there and their parents haven't done nothing wrong when there are parents put there who beat their kids and abuse their kids and nothing is done about it but they take children from loving parents. They try use the little things against you but yea foster carers ain't so innocent either they also abuse kids in care and get away with it so social workers don't actually know how to do their jobs they don't know how to protect children they are hypocrites because they take children into care to protect them as they say but they get abused in care. I was in the care system for 10 years and I know how these people work don't know how social workers sleep at night. This happens everywhere especially in Ireland they are all corrupt and social services should be shut down a lot of social workers are not even parents themselves so what do they know about children or been a parent especially a single parent they expect parents to be perfect when there is no such thing as a perfect parent. That was a great storyline for Lola and lexi in eastenders it was said but it shows what social workers are really like.
