Last night, EastEnders aired one of it's most beautifully shot episodes to date. Director Toby Frow, done a spectacular job giving the girls the send off they truly deserved while writer Rob Gittins done an equally amazing job with the eerie fairytail episode.
So how and why did Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell die? Here's what we think, soaps are dramatic and tragic for a reason, many characters don't get the happily ever after send-off simply because it's not dramatic enough, viewers would find it boring, it's a soap.
Both Rita and Sam who played Roxy and Ronnie had decided to leave, they both felt it was the right time for their characters to depart the show. Unfortunately for them, the decision was made to make it permanent and here's why we think it was the right decision, plus an explanation to that pool scene.
When you think of a list of tragic events that can happen to a character in a soap, the Mitchell sisters have pretty much ticked everything off on that list, at least one of them have experienced murder, rape, sexual abuse by a family member, drug abuse, death of a child, affairs, divorce, prison, car crash, being in a coma plus much more. What else could they have done?
Of course they could have had the lovely driving off into the sunset ending, but it's not iconic or dramatic. It would have been extremely unlikely for the characters to return in the future because no storyline would be strong enough, or it had already been done.
Fans have been speculating all night on social media, over how the sisters actually died. Many think Roxy banged her head, but she jumped in feet first.
The writers had put in the increased usage of drugs in Rita's character for a reason, it was going to play a big part of her death. They had actually considered doing an overdose storyline at one point.
Roxy had been using cocaine up until the big day, maybe even during. The effects of the drugs, the alcohol throughout the day plus the sisters both consuming a bottle of champagne each, even the temperature of the pool, combined could very easily lead to the death of Roxy.
Ronnie simply did not hesitate when she saw her sister floating lifeless in the pool, jumping into the water still in her wedding dress. The gown would have been so heavy and suffocating it would have been almost impossible for her to return to the surface.
As we said last week, we are still not 100% sure on Ronnie's fate, especially after we noticed Samantha being credited in Thursday's episode. Could Ronnie be in a coma, or simply Jack saying his goodbye's?
Whatever your thought's on the episode, you have to admit, it was brilliantly played out by the actors and beautifully written and directed.

I loved the wedding and loved how strong the sisters bond is. Ronnie always put Roxy first and died trying to rescue her sister. I found the episode amazing. Well done to the EastEnders crew. Well done to Sam and Rita especially because they put everything in to these last scenes.
ReplyDeleteAgree was symbolic and beautifulthe sisters bonded right to the end
DeleteWas an absolutely beautiful and incredible episode and very symbolic as ronnie always lived for roxy and in the end she died for her and with her. Excellent use of the cinderella narrative and the shot of ronnies single shoe
ReplyDeleteI'm gutted they have left,I hate getting use too new characters however I probably felt the same when they started. The dancing scene was brilliantly filmed however the drawing scene seemed too obvious, roxy jumped in and within 1 minute Ronnie sees her at the bottom of the pool, regardless of drugs and alcohol it just seemed unrealistic, when Ronnie dived in her dress material gathered behind her so you'd of thought she'd of reached roxy before any got around her head.Never mind I'm no producer just a viewer lol
ReplyDeleteAwful crap ending and bloody boring
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing cant wait for tonights one.
ReplyDeleteLiked the party scene with the kids and sisters reflects how a wedding should be and how they first took albert square by storm ie. Squirting water at others.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed it apart from roof scene which looked to predictable to be a death scene....who sits on the roof of a building on your wedding day dangling over the edge
My idea ronnie died from drowing because of the dress over her mouth and nose with the weight and material she couldnt get out of it which we see and because i see roxy put the drugs back maybe due to previous drug and drink i had a idea the the water might have been cold which ment she would have gone into shock which is possible
ReplyDeleteAmazing story glad they went together they were best friends as well as sister the length sisters would go for each other Ronnie and Roxy will be sadly missed as I loved watching them Roxy depended on Ronnie and they loved each other so much you got one you got both well dune to them gonna be more tears a head love you girls all the best for the future.
ReplyDeleteRonnie will be missed so much she was so good with Jack...and she was going to take on Roxy little girl as her own...
ReplyDeleteSamantha didn't decide to leave the show at all, she was simply written out of the show...
ReplyDeleteshe announced she wanted to leave months ago
DeleteBrilliant but sad to see ronnie and roxy leave,
