EastEnders will kick off one of this years biggest storylines next week

BBC

EastEnders has confirmed that the soap will tackle a harrowing rape storyline, with returnee Ruby Allen taking centre stage.

When Louisa's return was announced back in July, it was revealed that she would be involved in one of the biggest storylines of the year.

After returning to Walford next week, both Stacey and Ruby attend a party, but the following day Ruby confides in her friend about what happened the night before.

EastEnders have been working closely with the charity Rape Crisis, highlighting the complex issues surrounding sexual violence.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Executive Producer John Yorke said: "Whilst this story centres round an unseen rape, its real focus will challenge the stereotyping and myths that can surround sexual violence and consent."

"As a subject, it's difficult and incredibly moving but we hope that by EastEnders tackling this issue we can raise awareness about an incredibly important issue."

Yvonne Traynor from Rape Crisis said: "EastEnders have taken this responsibility very seriously and ensured that their portrayal of sexual violence has been thoroughly researched and is based on realism which is, sadly, so prevalent in our country today."
