Here's How EastEnders Were Going To Kill Off Grant Mitchell!

Back in 1999, Ross Kemp decided it was time for him to leave EastEnders, in a storyline which see the brothers drive into the Thames after Phil found out that Grant slept with Kathy.

Former executive producer Matthew Robinson has come out and revealed that his departure from the soap was dearly a permanent one.


Writing on Walford Web, Matthew said that he first heard of the intended explosive storyline , one that would see Grant Mitchell killed in a botched robbery, when the actor phoned him in the middle of the night.

Matthew went to to explain that he called then EastEnders boss Mal Young to discuss Ross' exit: "A bank robbery!! With a huge explosion!!! And a charred body," Mal told Matthew.

"No one can recognise it. The audience won't know if Grant's alive or dead! Alive or dead is good. Then we can bring him back in a year or two's time." "Of course. No way will we kill him. He's too big."


Instead of the proposed storyline, viewers will remember that Grant was missing after the car plunged into the river, leaving a panicked Phil screaming his brothers name.

Viewers thought that Grant was dead, that was until it was later confirmed that he had left the UK and set up a new life in Brazil.
