EastEnders Reveals Why Sean Slater Returns

Kate Oates reveals details about upcoming big storyline which brings Sean Slater home

EastEnders

Sean Slater is one of those characters that viewers have always wanted to see return, and EastEnders revealed earlier this week that the Slater hunk would be back, albeit just a guest role, but he'll return for a very important storyline.

It was revealed earlier this month that an upcoming storyline will see Jean Slater struggle with her mental health, something we caught a glimpse of over Christmas as she desperately tried to hold her family together.

Sean has always struggled to deal with his mum's mental health, leaving it to younger sister Stacey to deal with.

Many fans have speculated that Sean's return to could involve a previous storyline where he confessed to killing his father to his girlfriend, Tanya Branning.

At the National Television Award's last night, Kate Oates spoke to Digital Spy about why Sean is returning to Walford: "It's a lot to do with Jean's story," she said.

"I talked before about looking at Jean's mental health through the lens of her physical health. Obviously we know that Stacey has been in touch with Sean... but Jean doesn't know that!

"Jean hasn't seen him for 10 years, so there's a lot of stuff to play in there as well, when Jean finds out. So that's quite a big old deal."

"He's got so much stuff on the Square," Kate said. "I mean, does he even know that Roxy has died? How's his relationship with Jack gonna be? What does he think about little Amy?"

Kate also revealed that the storyline is one of the reasons Rob decided to return, and even had his own input: "He was giving me ideas and I was able to bring them back to the team."

Sean will also be in for a couple of shocks when he returns, he will find out that Roxy Mitchell has passed away, he will see Amy Mitchell, the daughter he believed was his, for the first time since he left Walford 10 years ago.

It was confirmed today that Robert is currently at Elstree filming his scenes and these are due to air in the spring.

EastEnders airs weeknights on BBC One.
