Christmas and New Year is the time of year soaps pull out all the stops with their storylines, and with EastEnders being back on the top spot where it belongs, we were excited to hear what Christmas 2019 has in store, as well as the shows 35th Anniversary in February 2020.
Soap boss Kate Oates, has revealed some of the characters that will take centre stage this Christmas is Karen Taylor and Sharon Mitchell as the affair between Keanu and Sharon comes to an explosive end.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Kate Oates revealed: "Sheanu is going to blow up, I think it's safe to say that's going to be pretty big at Christmas time..."

Executive producer Jon Sen also teased other big storylines playing out over the festive period, including Chantelle's abuse at the hands of her husband, Gray, and some big plots surrounding the relationship between Keegan Baker and Tiffany Butcher.
In the run up to Christmas, Kate revealed what to expect: "We've got some great stuff with Chantelle and Gray, that storyline will be continuing,"
"It's the EastEnders tradition of stories which explore really important issues and we are going to be pushing that story. We've been building it quite gently, very deliberately and building the public perception within the Square of the kind of man Gray is and the kind of marriage they have."

"Tiff and Keegan's burgeoning romance, that's lovely. It's a wonderful dynamic, superbly performed by those two. There's a real chemistry between them, loads of warmth and heart and we're really investing in that." Jon added.
If that's not enough, we have also learned that Honey Mitchell will "take action" over Adam Bateman's cheating ways, and some familiar faces will be returning to the square.
"I will just say that it's echoing what I said earlier, it's momentum really echoing through," Kate said. "It feels like every story meeting we're jam-packed with stuff and there's a real nice mix of tones.

"There's some really refreshing character dynamics as well – we're putting together certain characters that feel really right but that maybe haven't interacted before so that really mixes things up.
"We've got some lovely stuff coming up for the Slaters and Gillian did such a great job with the cancer story, that's not over yet, we're going to be seeing more of Adrian Edmondson (Daniel) so that's really exciting. So we're having a nice time really."
Since Kate joined the show, we have seen the returns of Sean Slater, Ben Mitchell, Lisa Fowler, Hunter Owen, and of course Bianca Butcher.
With the news that some familiar faces will be returning to Walford, could we finally see Janine Butcher or Grant Mitchell back where they belong?

Speaking to the Metro about EastEnders' upcoming 35th Anniversary, Kate revealed the Carters will be the main focus around the celebratory episodes: "We have a big Carter story at the forefront, and some great drama with Whitney too, so it is going to be a very exciting time for the show.
Between our huge September kick-off with the wedding week, right through to the anniversary beyond, there is no let up. I hope everyone will be as excited as Jon and I are!"
EastEnders airs weeknights on BBC One.
