With the pandemic undoubtedly putting a strain on the timescale of the grand unveiling, the new EastEnders set is coming along nicely, and already showing some big changes to Albert Square.
The current set was constructed over thirty years ago and was made using steel
frames, plywood, and brick panels made of plaster, and was only built to last
two years.
In the picture below, you can see the buildings (left) which currently house
the Slater, Cotton, Taylor, Branning families, have no rear and the steel
frames still visible, but pictures of the new construction show the brick
replicas have been built as actual houses, complete with windows and doors,
and even rear gardens which provide additional exterior shooting locations.

The current Elstree set we see on our screens today is in such a bad state, it's not possible for the soap to be filmed in high-definition. Once the new set is open, all outside filming will be done using HD cameras for the first time. If EastEnders used HD cameras today, viewers would instantly notice that buildings such as the Queen Vic were made of plaster and plywood.
The entire project is set to cost an eye-watering £87million, that's £27million more than budgeted, and the completion date has moved two years later than expected.

After all the building is complete, much of the work will move to the aging process. A huge part of the project will be to age all the brickwork, metalwork and paintwork to look like it has been there for decades.
