It's quite shocking in this day and age that people rush to their computers to complain about certain things on TV, but they did! Complaints received by Ofcom about Ben and Paul's scene in the funeral parlour may have been in poor taste (with a dead woman in a coffin) but has been thrown out by Ofcom. 76 complaints were lodged over Ben's implied sex scenes with Paul Coker on July 16 and 17.
43 viewers also complained about bad language after Carol called her jailed brother Max Branning a "bastard" during a heated prison visit in scenes airing on July 30.
All of the complaints have now been dismissed by Ofcom, which ruled that neither episode raised issues warranting investigation.
An Ofcom spokesperson said: "Ofcom assessed a
number of complaints about a storyline in these episodes and concluded
they didn't raise issues warranting further investigation.
"We
found the scenes were justified in the context of a long-running
plotline and sexual contact between the characters was implied rather
than overt.
"Our rules don't discriminate between scenes involving opposite sex and same sex couples."
On Carol's bad language, the spokesperson added: "After assessing a
number of complaints about offensive language in this episode of
EastEnders, we have found that it doesn't raise issues under our rules.
"We
found the language was only moderately to mildly offensive, wasn't
spoken aggressively and was justified by the context of the plotline. As
a result, we won't be taking the matter forward for investigation."
If so few people complain of the millions watching, that says a lot. Maybe there should be a minimum number of complaints before things are seriously investigated.
