Killing off Kathy Beale in EastEnders was undoubtedly one of the most
regrettable soap killings in EastEnders' history, but soap agent Melanie
Blake has revealed for the first time what lead soap writers to that decision.
Speaking to the
Metro, Melanie explained: "Nobody knows this, I have never told this story. She
wasn’t meant to be killed off and Gillian always intended to return at some
point"
"Adam Woodyatt went to the bosses and said he was tired of the stuff he was
getting and wanted something juicy so they went with killing off his mum off
screen."

It seems Gillian always wanted to return, but it took a while to make it happen: "It took 15 years of pitching to get around that mistake. And she hasn’t changed a bit – Ian Beale looks like her dad." she said.
"If it hadn’t been for me pitching over and over to get Kathy back It wasn’t
easy – it was only after they saw her in Hollyoaks that they realised how much
EastEnders was missing her."
EastEnders airs weeknights on BBC One.
