The Albert Square set was built on the lot it currently sits and was only meant to be in use for just six months. 36 years later and the iconic set is still standing.
The BBC has already agreed to rebuild the entire outdoor set, making it 20% bigger and HD/4K friendly. So what does that actually mean?
According to online sources, the houses will actually be made of brick instead of the fake facades made from plywood and brick panels made of plaster, and the buildings will considerably bigger .
They will be adding many more shops, as well as updating existing ones, which is probably why the Minute Mart got an extreme makeover recently.

Although there will see a brand new Queen Vic, Launderette, and Cafe, the new builds will undergo a process that will age the look of the buildings to appear decades older than they are.
Currently, the only places they can film both inside and out are the Minute Mart, Ian Beale's Fish and Chip shop, the Pharmacy and the Arches.
As soon as a character passes the threshold in most scenes, they have to travel a short distance to film the interiors in the studio.
Many of the house being built will also have rear gardens, something that hasn't existed since Albert Square was built, giving extra filming locations.

After the new set is complete, we'll likely see a seamless transition from old to new, without much difference on screen, except everything will look a lot clearer.
The old set is due to be demolished shortly afterwards. Let's hope the BBC allow a period of time where fans can go and view the iconic square before it is torn down.
Because of some setbacks including the pandemic, the completion date has been pushed back to 2023, but that could change. Would you like to visit the old set?
I'd love to visit the old and new sets. I think that any tour though should include at least one of the actors in the show, that could even be sold at a slightly higher price , but it would make it a lot more attractive than Corrie as they don't do that.
